Greetings - I am back. I know I have been away for a while. My priorities have changed, so there’s a reason why I’ve been away. But there’s some good news. I’m still committed to continuing my vlogs, but only when time permits. I do miss it.

So now I have a question for you as a continuation of my “What would you do?” series. In a recent workshop, there were about 25 to 30 people who attended, including both Deaf and hearing participants. Toward the end of the day, the Deaf participants ended up being scolded for having some side conversations/discussions, even though the conversations were relevant to the day’s presentation.

Wait a minute…there’s some other relevant points to consider. Watch the vlog and think about it…. What would you do?

On Saturday, September 27th, there will be a festival in Milwaukee, “Inspired: The Art of ASL”. I felt honored when they asked me to come and give a presentation on ASL. If you live in the area of Milwaukee, plan on going there and I look forward to meet you! For more information, click here, go to: http://www.dhha-wi.org and click on ASL Festival.

In his presentation, Joey Baer, one of the leading ASL vloggers, will discuss how ASL has inspired millions of people and their families. However, ASL still does not have full equality and respect afforded to other languages. It is widely known that early exposure to ASL increases Deaf AND hearing children’s cognitive, reading, and speaking skills. Joey will point out that it is time to standardize ASL in the Deaf Education system and beyond. Joey will also address ways we can attain full acceptance of and respect for our precious language, ASL, which has inspired our lives.

Audism Unveiled:Â (From Dawn Sign Press website)

Audism Unveiled exposes and explains another form of oppression prevalent in the Deaf community. Going beyond definitions, this powerful documentary uses real life experiences from Deaf people of varied social, racial, and educational boundaries –showing how this form of oppression does lasting and harmful damage.

Audism Unveiled will help educate and spread the knowledge that the oppressed are not alone, and share a common bond with many others who have experienced it. It is also beneficial to educate yourself, by seeing the many faces of audism, and the deep emotional scars resulting from this discrimination.”

As promised, here is another vlog to follow up on my “Leaving DeafRead” vlog from yesterday which includes some further thoughts. I remain firm in my stance that DeafRead needs to step up and change as well as raise their own expectations and standards in order to protect our beloved Deaf community. I usually keep my vlogs to under three of four minutes, but this vlog is about 6 1/2 minutes long. I felt it necessary to make this one a little longer to be able to express my thoughts thoroughly. Thank you.

I also would like to refer my viewers to an excellent vlog by Tommy I watched last night about how we can restore proper ethics to the blogosphere by showing each other respect. He also explains why certain critics and hecklers need to stop using loaded terms and stop taking “cheap shots.” Check it out as well! CLICK HERE to watch it.
