Thank you for your thoughts of people who missed seeing CNN’s interview with Dr. Davila. Your idea is almost like silent movie. Neat job! I also checked Gallaudet’s website and wondered why Dr.Davila’s interview with CNN reporter was not announced.

Thank you, Joey for sharing it.

He seems very objective and willing to pull things together. I knew him from Gally back then.

    I have confidence in him.

    It is time for healing!

    Hello,

I have finished watching the video clip, and I hate to say this, but I don’t understand why people are giving a lot of praise to Davila. I’ve noticed that the questions were softball ones, Davila gave easy answers.

As somebody who loves to read and watch news about politics, I am genuinely disappointed and surprised that Davila failed to compehrend the true meaning of his position and how he is supposed to take advantage of it. If I were his political consultant, I would strongly encourage him to take a different approach to how the healing process at Gallaudet is supposed to work correctly.

While Davila may be only interim president, he ought take this opportunity to shake up the board of trustees and send a powerful message, in effect, discrediting and rejecting Jordan’s philosophy. In the other words, pulling the rug out from under the BoT’s feet. Move quickly to neutralize any preceived opponent within Gallaudet administration, especially Paul Kelly and Jordan’s other supporters. Jordan may be now retired, but please don’t mistake his retirement as retiring from the battlefield, it is only a retreat to regroup and launch a devastating political counterattack. That is exactly what I would have done in Jordan’s position. Davila must be prepared for that.

The best way for Davila is to set his agenda, a compehrensive list of goals to be accomplished much like the president usually gives his annual State of Union speech. It lets the Congress know what President’s political agenda is and what priority should be given to certain projects and goals. Davila has only 18 months to accomplish whatever it is, which isn’t enough time to enact all needed reforms at Gallaudet.

Therefore, it is important for him to strengthen his position and actually make an effort to undermine BoT’s power, otherwise if left unchecked, I gaurantee you it won’t be a very pleasant experience when Davila is replaced in 18 months. Deaf people really needs to learn some important lessons in how to manuevur politically, otherwise BoT will preceive this as our greatest weakness and take sweet time in picking us apart politically.

On the other hand, as a Deaf person, I’m happy for Davila and Gallaudet. It may be very well that he is the right person after all. I just hope Davila doesn’t make any amateurish mistakes, otherwise we’re all going to end up regretting in giving too much of praise for Davila.

May God have mercy on all of us. Sigh…we gotta live with amateurs…Lord works in mysterious ways…

    Thanks, Joey!

If not for your share of information about this, I would have remained clueless. Davila’s interview touched my heart and gives me some hope.

What we saw is what the hearing world, audists or not, including the audists in the Deaf world, need to hear and see, which doesn’t often happen. I await for the Deaf community to move forward and keep going, not backward and into the dark ages.

Dr. Davila, if you are reading this, I thank you from the bottom of my heart and I know you are trying very hard to steer Gallaudet into the right direction.

Joey, I was all smiles from ear to ear as I was watching Dr. Davila and was kindled with pride.
He was very articulate before CNN which has the most viewership both nationally and internationally.
I know that it is too early to say, but I know that Dr. Davila will be THE healer! We do not know what to do without you, for we would not have been informed until the next day’s newspaper!

    Hi Joey,

When you get closed captioning opened up, would you let us know how you did it?

What are you using to extract the captioning from the E608 Line 21 data? What are you using to redisplay it? At what stage in the process?

About the only way I know how to do this at present is to dust off the old caption box and do an analog recording through that to get open captioning out of closed captioning.

Supposedly Scenarist can do this sort of thing, so I was wondering if you’re using that.

    Just curious… Alright, nosy! ๐Ÿ˜‰

I am grateful that you’ve posted it up on your blog that I didn’t aware about CNN’s interview part with Davila.

His words are bold, truth that he does feel a connection to the Deaf community; regardless, about his rank in this position and past experiences.

I hope that he is going to keep his words from beginning, not like some false hopes that we, the Deaf community, faced in the past with Jordan King. Jordan King acted like he is brighting our dreams, but it was…(no word can explain), but a horrible.

I hope that Davila will do the best, especially in his position, which it won’t easy because he’d be only a “temp” employee as an intern president.

But at least his words are still telling us more truths, even the news reporter was asking him the common questions, that we, ‘the deaf people,’ already know about it – he said it just right!

I am still caution what kind of positions that JFK and JKF are still in their positions within Gallaudet while they are having the opportunities to take a vacation for a year, while JKF is taking a bervance salary!?!

Are they going to come back and giving us a bad flashback?

They need to go somewhere – they can set a new university at moon. It’d be all worry-free for entire of us without of them!

Davila, please do your job; regardless if it is only a temp, but your position is very critical for the future of Gallaudet and the next president to pass on the ‘reality, honest’ work of being a president for the Gallaudet University!

    Linda (#17) –

Yes, I do recall something like you suggested – use old decoder and use different set up to make have open captions show up on the tape. I know it is some heavy technology stuff but that’s something I will try. I also got few tips from several readers.

Whoever figured this out, do share. I will do the same. Thanks!!

    Joey!

You’re too awesome to put this up for everyone to see – even for those who have seen it!

I enjoyed it much more the 2nd time around!

He will do GREAT and I sincerely believe he will improve Gallaudet!

…but not without a lot of support from everyone!

I don’t anticipate a problem in that area!

    Great job, President Davila! ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks, Joey, for posting this on your blog otherwise I would\’ve missed this commentary entirely. Wow, I\’m impressed with Dr. Davila\’s responses! Stating his commitment to cleaning up Gallaudet\’s mess and his enthusiasm in making plans to do so way before his very first day on the job is certainly impressive. And I especially loved the way he responded to why \”deaf people do not feel disabled or handicapped.\” He said it so right, so perfect!

Dr. Davila did superb job. I donรขโ‚ฌโ„ขt want to give negative comments but I was very disappointed that he used his speech while signing and he signed in straight English. I hope in the future he can use ASL only. I have a good speech but I will vow not to use it if I am on TV because it will give wrong impression to ignorant parents to think that all Deaf kids can be like me or Dr. Davila. We need more professionals to use ASLonly like Joey Baer, Carl Schroeder, Ridor, Ella and others always do.

Penny (#26) – Dr. Davila did not use his voice. He signed in English, which is his “normal” signing style. Of course he understands (and can use) ASL, but he comes from a generation where signed English was the normal way of communicating for formal occasions, such as his Introduction to Gallaudet and the CNN interview.

FYI, the voice interpreter for Dr. Davila had problems because he (male voice) seemed to be expecting more ASL, and Dr. Davila signed in exact English word order. Some Hearing people may have misunderstood some of Dr. D’s message…

Just my humble opinion – I could be totally wrong.

I second Penny. I am very disappointed that Dr. Davilla used “English” ASL. I had hard time following him, and I could say that he singed like JKF (maybe worse than her…)

It is just the matter that JKF was anti-Deaf while Dr. Davilla is trying to show that he is “pro-Deaf”.

Dr. Davilla needs ASL consultants soon…. and I’d rather to sit and see how Dr. Davilla leads Gallaudet and the Deaf Community.

Can someone explain why Dr. Davilla did a great job if questions were too easy, and answers were not so IMPACTFUL.

    Puzzled!!!

Barry- Thanks for your feedback. I thought he used his voice. When Dr. Davila and I chatted 27 years ago, he used ASL with me. I am just so tired of seeing many Deaf individuals used their voice or signed in English at formal occasions or on TV. I believe that most of them wanted to “please” hearing audience. We need to change that manner and encourage Deaf individuals use ASL on TV or at formal occasions. We have interpreters so why not use them to interpret for us? If Dr. Davila meet with hearing people in private and sign in english or to use his voice then that is up to him. No objection here. I prefer to speak for myself when I meet with hearing people but if there is Deaf people in the crowd then I prefer to use ASL and let the interpreter do the job. We need to have pride in ASL and respect our culture too. Unfortunately, I don’t see a lot of pride out there today. I hope you see my point here. Thanks.

Suppose you are in California and tune for CNN News at 11 PM PST, all of you will frustrate there is no live closed caption text as CNN News at 2 AM EST to 6 AM EST has no live CC, too. We called live closed caption problem that CNN apparently avoid take care on the digital recorder or monitor except vendor (VITAC).
Last Year I asked them to move the digital recorder or VCR until after the caption service to capture Pix, audio and CLOSED CAPTION very simple solution to fix in few minutes.
They sent it to the tech group to review and apparently they were stuck because of security issue than access issue.
Bark CNN to do now as “Rerunning Closed Caption NOW” or go ahead to ask Congress to discard old FCC Rule and make new rule to apply all many devices -IPHONEs, etc. as soon.
My heard is sorry for all deaf/HH watchers in PST zone at 11 PM – NO Closed caption.
This is very important action that maybe enable using video streaming in the future.
Other example, if you use On-Demand for CNN, you see no CC. Often We bark CNN but CNN staff do not know very much and referred to VITAC but VITAC reffered to CNN. Nothing to do.
Also Sorry for CNN to pay live CC a lot of money so they should hire deafHH workers for them and accept my suggestion that took me to struggle in few years. Bark or write to Congress to get action. Thank you for reading and get action. Funny CNN Students News had closed caption in 30 minutes. They should take Cnn News staff. Sam
