I will not go there because people of Deafread didn’t open the award ceremony to the public. They were not very friendly during luncheon and 100% hypocrite. They are very biased and I would not encourage people to spend lots of money for flight and hotel because it will be their huge waste. Sorry to say, but that is what people need to know the truth about Deafread.
I regret you feel that way but it is not about DeafRead but it is about empowerment of Deaf people. We need to get together to discuss on how we empower each other and bring ourselves to next level.
We also need to stop the deficit thinking or peg on people or whatsoever. We need to work toward the goals.
So sad that you are not coming.. but I am going for sure and I do not care about hypocrite people because they are nothing to me! I am used going to many film festivals, awards ceremony, I have encountered many weird actors, film makers..I don’t give a (bleep)!!!! all I want to have fun! Deafread conference 2008 will be my first time and I do not care wheither I win or lose awards nor audience love or hate me. No one is going to stop me! only Gary Brooks can stop me! I am going to have fun because I say so!
Your dismissive attitude toward Ex-Blogger is alarming. You should take people’s feelings into serious consideration. Many of them have been wronged by both deafies & hearing people. By disregarding their feelings, it is a perfect recipe of causing the deaf community to enter the dying stage because many deafies would become afraid of the deaf community out of fear of being mocked, ignored & casted out! I hope you will become more respectful toward everyone’s feelings so everyone can feel more at ease at working together to empower the deaf community. A better choice of words would do the trick!
I have nothing against the Deafread Conference except the ridiculous award ceremony. It only would glorify certain people & help inflate their egos. There are already too many kinds of award ceremonies where everyone practically can win awards! People should boycott the award ceremony because it is so unnecessary, selfish & unproductive.
It is our chance to meet more people to make our quality of life as a Deaf person better. I know that there are some bad and good comments going on and it is impossible to let bad comments ruin this event and our life! Because our hearts are too strong and huge to cry and cover blankets over our heads.
Please respect everyone’s passions for a better quality of life and view them as many true ideas and comments.
The Awards ceremony is another way for us to all get the together and celebrate together what everyone has accomplished over the year. It’s a way show the appreciation for many bloggers/vloggers who have spend hours to create the content that we all read or watch.
It’s a positive thing when those who have made a difference in the voters’ eyes are shown some recognition for their contributions.
About ex-blogger and disappointed, I won’t enter into this arena, because I have never been to a DeafRead Conference, and can’t speak for anybody, I can only agree or disagree personally.
But I will quote two people that makes 100% sense to me:
GARY BROOKS: “No one is going to stop me! only Gary Brooks can stop me!”
Whoever is not happy, this quote is for you. Only you can stop yourself. Who is to say they can stop you?
Next quote:
JOEY BAER: “We need to get together to discuss on how we empower each other and bring ourselves to next level.”
In regards to that comment, he started with “WE” and it’s not about you, me, Joey or Gary. It’s about us collectively as bloggers.
If there are concerns to address, come, express your feelings, and who knows, people will respond. It is about empowering every each one of us to elevate to the next level, nobody is going to be left out.
Tayler just mentioned limited fund to invite limited people… He meant well, obviously.
Don’t you realize there are not much awards for the Deaf people other than fraternities, sports, flims or employments?? Deaf people need encouragements in their doings. I feel this is a nice way to award one in Deaf communties, really. It is not wasting our time.
hummmm.
Like people don’t have Vlog or Blog “BUT” did make “COMMENT” to them and they did not hear back their answer . That can turn people off and can hurt their feeling. Because The “comment” did have the knowledge to share. Like me do only “Comment” to anyone because several people do see it and they do improve make better idea each other or NOT. That is caution people out there of their feeling like walking on the narrow balance to involve or not.
I am not Stupid and I can see it . Some do respect and some do NOT respect.
Yes, I do acknowledge ex-blogger and Disappointed’s comments. It is still called deficit thinking because if you look at their comments, they used a lot of negative words. I even send an email to “Disappointed” to meet via VP to discuss his/her view. I hope I will meet with him/her.
From day one when I started my vlog, I always emphasized that we need to be positive while we try to unify. And truthfully, I do have some concerns about DeafRead but this is not the place to discuss because there will be so much misunderstandings. If it continues to bother me, I will just talk with them and share my thoughts. Or we can discuss as a group at DeafRead conference. That is exactly why I am encouraging us to be positive and go to the conference to talk more about it.
I look forward to talk more about “framing” in 2008 and beyond.
My original words to you regarding your dismissive attitude, still stands. However, I must admit I was a little surprised that you would allow my comment to be subscribed. Gave it a 50-50 chance that it would go through. I just can’t believe that you would resort to labeling anyone who disagrees or has a different opinion by telling them they have deficit thinking. It sounds like what cults are practicing & the deaf culture is no cult by any means. By jumping to labeling deficit thinking on anyone is a way to shut them up in an aggressive manner like a schoolyard bully would do, how can the parties discuss things rationally? In addition, it is to deflate & belittle anyone who expresses a different opinion. After all, everyone counts! Everyone deserves to have a voice especially the deaf ones! Deafies should not be exempted for justifying mistreatment toward other fellow deafies since we are no better than hearing people!
Looks like you have read books on positive thinking. Joel Osteen has published books in that area. However, when people focus only on positive thinking, they can become disconnected to the reality around them. I am not saying that positive thinking is bad because it is not but if one emphasizes too much on positive thinking w/o considering the surrounding facts, a good conclusion cannot be reached that way.
I am still in disbelief that you would make a big deal out of my comment. After all, I didn’t say that I was against Deafread conference…only the award ceremony specifically in which I perfectly have the right to say so. I know the Deafread conference would prove to be very fulfilling & mindbogging for many including yourself. It is just that I personally think the awards are totally unnecessary. It doesn’t apply to the deaf culture only but the hearing world as well! From past experience, I would see how people would adopt a superior attitude & become useless to everyone when they win awards. People would be turned off by them. Look at Marlee Matalin for instance. She is no darling in the deaf community by any senses! We cannot let this happen in our deaf community & see it become more weakened. The last thing we need is deaf people with inflated egos just because they won some awards. Even if I was a blogger or vlogger in which I am not, I would most definitely NOT want to be nominated for an award or whatever!
After seeing your second comment belitting me & Ex-Blogger (I don’t know who he or she is), it is sad that you have continued the tirade by going after anyone who has valid & strong opinions that would not fit your thinking pattern. So that is why I am not going to bother getting in touch with you via VP if irrationality should appear in the picture. Personally, I am not interested in going in circles with you. So let’s conclude this & get moving on!
Despite our disagreements, I still do respect you. Finding you to be a terrific vlogger that the deaf community desperately needs, it is always a great pleasure reading your vlogs although I wish it can be more frequent. But I do understand your busy schedule at school & being a family man! Remember that, all of us have to work on becoming better persons by being more sensitive to others. Of course, it would apply to me as I don’t consider myself better than anyone else. So I am sure you would consider this as a learning experience. Please don’t think that you are attacked which is not the case. Always room for improvement so everyone can benefit greatly from that!
That is ok …… I understand …… next thursday that will be my last time for I no longer to make anyone on my COMMENT anymore on Deafread. I just move on my life.
Good luck on your 2008 Deafread Confernce on Feb.
Happy Holiday Season
I know that the comments section isn’t the best vehicle to air our disagreements, but I want to point out that Joey was trying to shift us to more positive-thinking approaches and proaction. Personally, I don’t think he was being dismissive, but encouraging us all to be more supportive of each other.
It’s always easy to call out our flaws, but very difficult to focus on the real motives of our vloggers, bloggers, and leaders. Joey, since Day One, has been all for the betterment of our community. I get my daily inspiration from Joey and others.
Of course we should listen to differing opinions, but we all should be reminded to look at the possibilities rather than what’s lacking.
We really need to unite; the longer we argue, the longer the status quo is maintained.
Yes I am aware that you were honest with me and I have no problem with that. That was the reason I approved the comments. 🙂
However, I still believe that the words you used such as ego, selfish, unproductive, dying stage in #7 was not wisely used in criticizing DeafRead. With the way you write, it definitely can written better than that. I have that strong feeling that we need to remind and teach each other how to use words better including myself.
I found your thought from #18 (“… but if one emphasizes too much on positive thinking w/o considering the surrounding facts, a good conclusion cannot be reached that way.:) interesting. I am strong believer that we can find conclusion through positive thinking AND wise choice of words. I have gone through some disagreements with my peers with postiive discussion and we eventually reached and agreed on conclusions afterall.
I still hope we will have an opportunity to meet via VP to discuss this further. I have met several people via VP after some disagreements on some blogs/vlogs, we FELT much better and gained more respect for each other. I certainly hope for the same with us.
Joey- I am reading a new book written by Shirley McClaine. I was very excited when I saw her new book came in. She is one of my favorite authors. Anyway, she mentioned that technology is making democracy obsolete because we don’t talk to each other much anymore and we do not debate issues (in persons) since many are spending more time on the computer. I agree with her but at the same time I know using computer have positive side like reading blogs/vlogs from Deafread. I agree that conference is a good idea where everyone can see each other in person (Shirley McClaine will be happy when she hears about the conference) because we can share our thoughts or give constructive feedback on many topics in live. However, I personally do not agree with awards. I recalled sharing with one man which we always bumped each other at different places and we can’t even remember how we got connected but anyway when we see each other we always share our thoughts. I recalled him saying “awards for bloggers/vloggers†for what? For what? There should not be awards because blogs/vlogs are open to the public to share thoughts, feelings, and opinions and they are not there to compete. I agree wholly with him. I went home laughing because he made a good point. I know some hearing people do give awards. I am speaking for both hearing and Deaf that presenting awards for bloggers/vloggers are plainly stupid. Just so stupid. I do not have defective thinking. It is my opinion and some can disagree with me and I still respect them like I respect you.
I praised you to include negative comments. I strongly believe that the Vloggers should publish negative and positive comments in order to let people be judges.
I did express contructive criticism to one of the Vloggers. That Vlogger spread the wrong concept. I had to criticize that Vlogger. Guess what the Vlogger did was to remove my constructive criticism so that person considered that the Vlogger refused to admit that mistake. So I reported this to the DEAFREAD editors. Guess what they still keep that Vlogger. Well… I can understand how disappointed and ex-blogger felt.
Continue including both negative and positive comments.
It is a fact that when a person receives a negative comment, he or she would improve.
We are balanced people along with negative and positive comments. We cannot be always positive.
Joey, I always enjoy your VLOGs! Keep up the good work!!!!
I was reading between you, Joey and the other two, ex blogger and disappointed. I can understand both actually three sides and where each of you are coming from and how each of you feel about on some issues, but my point is what happened to the family of deafhood yet it has gotten bitter between the three of you? It is not about the use of words or some attitude issue. Let’s drop it and be one big deaf family and work together as one big happy deaf campers! 😉

Last year DeafRead received sponsorship which only afforded dinner for 33 people. That was the best we could do with limited funds.
For 2007 Blog Awards, we worked to expand and open this event to the public. Looking forward to it!
